Water monitoring promotes use of hydrological data

As part of the ongoing efforts to promote sustainable integrated water resources development and management, a training on management of hydrological stations and hydrological data was recently conducted in Rwanda.

The trainings were conducted by IGAD-HYCOS project, an initiative designed to promote sustainable IWRM in the IGAD region through enhancement of regional cooperation and collaboration in the collection, analysis, dissemination and exchange of hydrological and hydro-meteorological data and information for water resources assessment, monitoring and management.

IGAD – HYCOS aims at providing adequate infrastructure for hydrological observations and appropriate regional cooperation in information exchange among the IGAD countries.

During the training, held in Musanze, late 2016, a team of trainees were taken to the field to install and observe how the hydrological stations are functioning. The aim of this exercise was to improve the capacity on hydrological data collection using modern equipment in Rwandan institutions both national and local (district level) in charge of environmental and water resources management.
