New RLS Radar sensors to capture hydrological data

Two radar sensors have been installed at Ntaruka station and Ngaru station to help capture hydrological data. The radars were installed in the context of implementing the project of “Technical Support Programme to the Republic of Rwanda on Climate and Hydrology”. This project is supported by African Climate Policy Center ( UNECA/ACPC) through  a memorandum of understanding that was signed with the Ministry of Natural Resources (MINIRENA) in January 2013.

The objectives of the project is to provide investment and technical support to improve the hydrological observation and data management systems in Rwanda which will contribute to the country’s effort to adapt to adverse impacts of climate change.

The installed radars will help in capturing and disseminating of hydrological data to strengthen the integrated water resources management department in the Rwanda Water and Forestry Authority.

These instruments are automatic and will facilitate staff at IWRMD with necessary statistics to observe hydrological data remotely. The information provided by this system will facilitate timely management of droughts and floods.
